Child Support
Helping Pennsylvania Parents Understand Child Support
Being a parent can be one of the most rewarding experiences of life, but it does come with unique expenses. Visits to the doctor, daycare, summer camps, private schools and other expenses make it very difficult to raise a child on a single parent's income.
At the Philadelphia Law Offices of Sam Dalton, I will help you understand what to expect in child support proceedings and work to ensure that all of the necessary information is considered by the court. Contact me to schedule an appointment to find out how I can help with your child support concerns.
Knowing What to Expect
For many of my clients, stress comes from not knowing what to expect in their family law cases. As your family lawyer, I will do everything I can to help you understand how the laws apply to your situation and form realistic expectations.
Pennsylvania's child support guidelines take into account both parents' incomes to determine a figure that the child should receive each month in support. This figure is designed to reflect each parent's ability to care for their child.
Custody can affect child support determinations. Sometimes, a parent who does not have primary physical custody will be entitled to a reduction, depending on how much time the child spends with that parent. However, it is very rare to see either parent not have to pay anything.
When You Need to Change the Support Order
When a substantial change in circumstances occurs, you may need to seek a child support modification. Changes that can lead to modifications include:
- Reduction in income
- Remarriage of one parent
- Birth of a new child to one parent
- Relocation of one parent to another state
When One Parent Doesn't Cooperate
Child support enforcement proceedings can have very serious consequences. If one parent has refused to pay child support, a judge can require that parent to pay and even send him or her to jail for refusing to pay child support. I will represent either parent in enforcement matters to protect their interests.
